Spring CleaningWe get several questions from customers about spring cleaning. Mostly, what’s the importance of spring cleaning; why should I do it?

Spring is symbolic of many things. To many it’s the season of rebirth and new beginnings. It’s a time to come out of the hibernation of winter (literally, for some animals) and get back into the swing of things. It’s a time to open the windows and let some fresh air in.

We believe the importance of spring cleaning is akin to one’s health – both mental and physical.

Your home, has been sealed from the elements for months. Doors shut, windows sealed, no fresh air coming in and out. And if you have a forced air heating system, you probably have had some dust issues over the last several months.

Clearing your home of clutter and grime can actually make you feel better, according to researchers at UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives and Families:

A link between high cortisol (stress hormone) levels in female home owners and a high density of household objects. The more stuff, the more stress women feel. Men, on the other hand, don’t seem bothered by mess, which accounts for tensions between tidy wives and their clutter bug hubbies.

Women associate a tidy home with a happy and successful family. The more dishes that pile up in the sink, the more anxious women feel.

So, with this knowledge here are our top three cleaning tips for 2015:

1.KEEP. DONATE. TRASH. Take this tip one step at a time. May it be a closet, bedroom, basement or garage, tackle this in phases at a time when you know you can do it successfully. For example, if organizing the front closet is your goal for this weekend, make three piles: KEEP, DONATE, and TRASH. You should set clear rules about what you keep, donate or trash, too. For example, have you used or worn it in the last year? Is it damaged in some way? Could someone less fortunate than you get good use out of it?

2.DUST. For whatever areas of the house you’ve completed step 1, use a damp microfiber cloth, wipe down any shelves, handles, countertops, nooks and crannies before you start reorganizing the space. Work top-to-bottom, left-to-right. That way, no stone is unturned and all areas will be cleaned and dusted.

3.ORGANIZE KEEP. The hardest part is over. You’ve trashed the TRASH and donated the DONATE piles. Now it’s time to take care of the KEEP. Depending on what you’re organizing, it’s always a good rule of thumb to have clear bins for things you need access to on a regular basis. If we stick with the front closet example, have clear bins for items like hats and bags. And store items that you won’t be needing until next winter like gloves and scarves.
